Estetrol lecture at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm by Prof Herjan Coelingh Bennink

On November 8, 2007, the CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of Pantarhei Bioscience, Prof Herjan Coelingh Bennink, has presented the yearly and prestigious 20th Egon Diczfalusy Lecture 2007 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The title of the Lecture was: “Estetrol – a New Estrogen and a Fetal SERM”. The fetal steroid Estetrol (E4) was discovered by Egon Diczfalusy at the Karolinska Institute in 1965. Estetrol has been neglected since the eighties of the last century and was rediscovered by Pantarhei. Estetrol is now in phase II of clinical development for several indications such as the treatment of breast cancer, the treatment of auto-immune diseases, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT; vaginal atrophy; hot flushes) and as the estrogen in oral contraceptives to replace ethinylestradiol (EE). Estetrol is a natural SERM, since it acts as an antiestrogen on breast tissue and as an estrogen on other tissues i.e. brain, bone, the uterus and the vagina. The presentation of the E4 Lecture at the site of its discovery was well received.
